Chicago Bears made a deal with Carolina Panthers on Friday, March 10, to trade the first overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft for multiple draft picks and D.J. Moore, a sixth-year wide receiver. While this trade positions the Panthers to search for their future quarterback, the notable impact on fantasy football comes from Moore joining the Chicago Bears for his 25-year-old season.

D.J. Moore's Fantasy Football Impact

D.J. Moore was selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers, joining the team during a challenging time for a wide receiver. Cam Newton's performance was declining, and the Panthers were on the brink of a quarterback transition that would persist throughout Moore's tenure in Carolina.

Despite this, Moore made an impact in his rookie year, amassing 55 receptions for 788 yards and two touchdowns, earning him a spot as a low-end WR3 in fantasy football. Over the next four seasons, Moore's role as a primary target would only expand, leading him to rank in the top 10 in target share during the last two seasons.

Although Moore has demonstrated his ability to be highly efficient at times, his fantasy production has been hindered by a lack of reliable quarterback play. He has never finished higher than WR16 in half-PPR leagues and has scored more than four touchdowns in a season only once.

However, one potential attribute that could help him generate big fantasy weeks is his recent capability to make deep plays, as evidenced by his top-10 ranking in average target depth last season. This skill should bode well for him with his new team, as they have a tendency to employ deep plays as a fundamental aspect of their offensive strategy.

Adding a legitimate number one wide receiver to the roster, alongside two other wideouts who are comfortable with stretching the field, could help maximize Justin Fields' passing potential. Both Darnell Mooney and Chase Claypool had average target depths above 12 yards with the Bears last season.

Additionally, tight end Cole Kmet, who led the team with a 20% target share in 2022, completes the above-average pass-catching corps.

While this may not turn the Bears into one of the most pass-heavy teams in the league, their willingness to take shots downfield and the presence of a strong receiving corps could help increase Fields' efficiency and, potentially, his volume as well.
